Pets Welcome: Yappy Hour and Beyond

There are few better ways to close out a workday than with a frosty beer in your hands and a four-legged friend by your side. Trouble is, your local watering hole doesn't allow your pup in the bar, despite his good looks, shiny coat, and general gusto. But here's the good news: at Ward Village's REAL Gastropub, dogs are welcome. That's right, every Monday from 6 pm until closing, you and your dog can kickback on REAL's lanai. It's called Yappy Hour and to make it even more enticing, they're offering 10 percent off your bill and a special treat for your pooch as well.

"We've always loved dogs here at REAL and they've always been welcome on our lanai. We figured, why don't we just publicize it more and make a special night of it? That's where the idea came from to start Yappy Hour and people really seem to love it," says REAL's owner Lisa Kim. "We have some really great food and a huge assortment of beers for you to enjoy while you kick back with your pet."

While finishing the day off with a bottle of suds and your best (four-legged) friend sounds perfectly enticing, you're by no means limited to REAL alone. In fact, all of Ward Village's open spaces are pet-friendly. Yep, every last yard. We think it makes for a better neighborhood, where pets and owners can interact over our shared love of animals.

"Being able to work in a pet-friendly place like Ward Village is great," says David Kim, owner of 'Oiwi Ocean Sports, located at Ward Warehouse. "We love bringing our dog, Owen, into the store. He loves it here and so do our customers. People just love being around him. He's really popular."

Kim's insight into the positive effects that his pup may have on his customers emblematic of the findings of larger scientific studies. In fact, there's some hard evidence supporting just how beneficial interacting with pets, either at work or in your neighborhood, can be for your health. Financial and business magazine Fast Company recently found that businesses that allowed pets in the workplace held more collaborative employees, resulting in better productivity and creative ideas.

"Dogs are a social catalyst. Stopping by someone's desk to give their dog a belly rub inevitably leads to striking up a conversation with their owner," wrote the publication. Further, according to a 2010 study from Central Michigan University, it was found that having dogs in the workplace and in your neighborhood can lead to more trust and interaction between coworkers and neighbors, resulting in a better overall end-product for the business and stronger communities. Even the simple act of petting a pup can lead to an increase in the stress-cutting hormone oxytocin.

The next time you're ready to spend the day shopping, dining, or simply kicking back and enjoying an afternoon beer, remember that at Ward Village you can always bring your pet with you. They'll not only enjoy the outing, but we'll all be better for it.
