Anaha: Men at Work

Standing in front of the loading zone at Anaha, an army of construction workers busily moves through the bustling jobsite. Soon, this new residential tower will be topped off as the last bit of concrete is poured.

Not long after, the building will be completed and eager new residents will move in and a new neighborhood will take shape. But none of it would be possible without the steadfast work of the construction teams who quite literally shaped Anaha with their own hands. In the interviews below, we're highlighting three of the men who helped to erect Anaha, getting their thoughts on being part of such an ambitious development, and gaining some insight into the backstory of the stickers displayed on their hard hats.

1

Scott Correa

Mason Foreman, Anaha

I’m a mason foreman, which means that my crew and I are responsible for all of the concrete and slab work you see behind you. All of the concrete that’s poured, that’s us. So we take care of that and make sure it’s perfect.

How long have been working here at Anaha?

I've actually been here since the footing, so basically since day one. From the ground up when there was nothing here to where it is today. Working here at Anaha is an accomplishment for me and my crew. This is what we do and we take a lot of pride in our work. But sometimes, I'll look back at how far we've come and it's pretty impressive. It's pretty great feeling seeing it all come together.

Can you talk about the legacy of this project?

I really look forward to when I retire, about 30 years from now, and taking my family through here on a drive and being able to point out all of the buildings that I helped to create here. That's a great feeling when you can look back on what you've done with pride.

What do the stickers on your hard hat mean?

These are safety stickers that represents three different jobs that I've worked on.

This other sticker represents the stop action order, which keeps us all safe. We all have this one.

2

John Esperas

Quality Control, Anaha

My job here is quality control. I deal with all of the saws, make sure everything’s done right. Make sure everyone and everything is running smooth and everything is as good as it can be.

How long have you been here?

I've been working here since day one. It's coming together really fast! We have a great team here. Such a great crew, so many good people. From the ground up, there's just great camaraderie. I've had some other jobs that I don't always love going to, but not this one. I love coming to work here at Anaha. I'm very proud of this job.

What do the stickers on your hard hat mean?

All of these stickers represent safety training courses that we've done here on this job; basically different courses I've gone through.

I've noticed that there's different colored hard hats for different workers. How does that work?

Yeah, you'll see the hard hats represent different things based on what color they are. Every hat goes by different colors. White hats are reserved for foreman, brown are regular workers, and the electricians have yellow hard hats.

3

Robert Haynes

Labor Foreman, Anaha

I work here at Anaha as a labor foreman. I have a great crew of guys I work with and we’re responsible for stripping the forms, unloading the trailers of material that we’ve received from the mainland, and then sending it back out again.

How does it feel to be a part of something so big?

It feels great. I have two kids and when they get a little older, I can look back at Anaha with them and show them what their dad built, show them that I was a part of such a great project.

What's your favorite part about working here?

I love the guys I work with. It's hard work, but it's gratifying. I take my job seriously—we all really do— but we try and have a little bit of fun. I really look forward to coming to work every day.

What do the stickers on your hard hat mean?

This sticker represents my love of fishing. I was born on a boat and fishing has always been a part of my life.

This is Stand Down sticker that we all wear. Whenever you see something out of the ordinary, you can stop work. It doesn't matter who you are. If you see something that's not safe, you can halt the job.

This is a safety training course I completed. Before you go onto the job site you need to go through a course about emergency procedures, etc. What to do in case of a fire. How to move through the site safely, it's something we all have to do and it's really important.
