Five Things You Should Know About Merriman's
Photos by Steve Czerniak
As you can imagine, we've been spending more than our fair share of time over at the new Merriman's.
Situated just down the street from the IBM Building, this new eatery, with its tasteful design and even tastier fare, has drawn quite the buzz since opening last month. But there's more than meets the eye, and the mouth, at Merriman's. Below, we've outlined five of our favorite takeaways from Honolulu's hippest new restaurant.
The lobster pot pie is dynamite.
If you haven't had the joy—or haven't seen the dish splashed across your Instagram feed lately—the lobster pot pie is out-of-this-world delicious. Perfect for sharing, this recipe features chunks of keahole lobster and small kine farms mushrooms surrounded in a rich, savory sauce and flanked by a crispy corn crust. Simple and delicious, you will love it. The person you share it with will love it. Good times will be had by all.
Kealopiko created the fabric for the banquets.
Did you notice that wonderfully fun and tasteful pattern that's emblazoned upon the seats and banquets? Well, in the spirit of collaboration, the team at Merriman's worked with local South Shore Market retailer, Kealopiko, to create the fabric. Featuring a fun mix of flora, the print is reminiscent of old Honolulu, with a modern flair, and strikes the perfect tones for Merriman's. Now if we could only get it in an aloha shirt…
They have local oysters!
Oysters have burst on the culinary scene in recent years, and for good reason: their utterly amazing. A good oyster will change your life. Salty, briney, and zesty, a fresh oyster tastes like the spray of the ocean. And at Merriman's, they're sourcing some of our favorite oysters from Kualoa Farms. Grown right here in O'ahu (true story) these babies are best eaten by the dozen with your friends and a glass of rose.
That wallpaper Tho'
As die-hard fans of all things midcentury and Ossipoff, we're smitten with the wallpaper behind the bar. At first glance it may appear to be a interesting pattern, it's actually a nod to the iconic IBM Building, located just down the street. The pattern, an homage to the brisel-soleil that serves as a facade, provides a smart nod to the heritage of the neighborhood and we get a kick out of it every time we make our way to the bar.
They make a mean drink.
Speaking of making our way to the bar, after a long work week, who doesn't like to kick back with a few friends and wipe away the stress while watching the sunset over Honolulu? Throw in a delicious beverage and you've got all the makings of a perfect moment. And in Honolulu, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more delicious drink than the Merriman's Mai Tai, topped with their signature honey lilikoi foam. Trust us on this one.
