Inside the September Issue of Forward Journal

We're proud to announce that the 10th issue of FORWARD Journal is out on newsstands in Ward Village. While we consider each and every publication to be a labor of love, this issue was truly one for the books as it marked our 10th edition. To celebrate, we knew we wanted to do something special and decided to team up with local illustrator Nick Kuchar to create our cover. With his unique, vintage-inspired style, Kuchar helped dream up a captivating street scene at Ward Village and we're thrilled with the result. In addition to drafting up our cover, we were able to sit down with the artist to learn more about his backstory, inspiration, and style in "The Illustrious Illustrator." Keep an eye on Kuchar in the future, he's definitely going places.

We also sat down with Amanda Dameron, editor of the famed architecture and design magazine, Dwell, to discuss the plethora of ways that we can all utilize smart design to make the most of living in smaller spaces. Her insight into the way smart design can better our lives in the "The Art of Living Large in Smaller Spaces" truly resonates. To round out the issue, we walked right across the street from Ward Village to Ala Moana Beach Park to get the lowdown on the Honolulu Lawn Bowls Club. For more than 70 years, a dedicated team of lawn bowling enthusiasts have tended to the greens and kept the game going. If you're looking for a perfect date activity or a casual way to unwind, check out the Honolulu Lawn Bowls Club; it's a true oasis and hidden treasure in the city.

In our feature "The Preservationists" we took a careful look at a checkered time in Hawaiian history when hula faced persecution and was forced to go underground. Thanks to a dedicated crew of practitioners, hula continued to be taught in secret, ensuring that the history and cultural practices of Hawaiians endured. Lastly, we sent our intrepid food writer, Megan Tomino, to the Honolulu Fish Auction to chronicle what day-break looks like at this unique fish auction that allows the general public to bid against chefs and restaurant owners for the day's freshest catch.

Each and every day, a new chapter in Ward Village unfolds and we're honored to be chronicling the people and places that are shaping this exciting element of the city. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed producing it.
