REAL A Gastropub: Oktoberfest Beer Roundup
Oktoberfest is just around the corner, but you don't have to go to Germany to celebrate. Real a Gastropub, tucked away in Ward Village, has it covered. A cozy, dimly lit pub with a sports bar feel, Real offers two levels of seating, a bar, comfy booths, tables, and an outdoor area. For the gastropub, beer specialist and beverage director Anthony Messina has curated a diverse selection of finely crafted beers from all over the world that stand well on their own or pair perfectly with the delicious tapas-style dishes created by Chef Mike Longsworth. If you visit, expect to choose from 29 beers on tap, over 250 bottled beers, and a full cocktail bar.
To kickstart Oktoberfest, a German festival celebrated throughout the month at REAL, we got the scoop from Anthony on the beers that the pub is featuring, and what they pair best with, whether or not you made it to their Oktoberfest dinner this past Monday with dishes by Chef Longworth:
- Breakside Kölsch, from the Breakside Brewery in Portland, Oregon. It's a light pilsner that is served year-round on draft at Real. It is versatile and pairs well with any meal. Longworth served beer-braised beef and sauerkraut alongside the kolsch.
- Pinkus Alt, a malty bottled beer from Brauerie in Munster, Germany. With a deep malty flavor, it's best paired with a rich dish. Real paired it with beer spätzle and brussel sprouts with bacon. If you like the Pinkus Alt, you can find it at Real year-round as well!
- Ayinger Oktoberfest Marzen, Ayinger is a seasonal beer, brewed in Germany specifically for Oktoberfest. It's distributed in early September to limited locations and is only be available for a month or so. Real paired this beer with the main course of sauerbraten, red cabbage, and pretzel dumplings. It's a smooth, lighter-bodied amber that is great to enjoy on its own or with as an accompaniment to any meal.
- Hitachino Nest Commemorative Ale, a sweet, light ale from Japan that is a perfect match with any after-dinner treat, especially chocolate. It is available at Real all year and is perfect for pairing with a chocolate black forest pie for Oktoberfest.
REAL hosts weekly live music and a weekly beer event on Tuesdays, Tap Attack, that showcases a different brewery and offers between four and ten of its beers on tap.
