Ward Village Takes The LEED In Honolulu & The U.S.

We sat down with Katrina Morgan, the LEED consultant for Ward Village, to learn more about what the certification means, and how it will enrich the lives of those who will live, work, and play in the neighborhood.

LEED stands for "leadership and energy in environmental design," a concept created by the U.S. Green Building Council, and its significance to environmental impact and effortless living has been part of our mission from the very beginning.

Our two newest towers, Anaha and Waiea, are LEED-certified, and our whole neighborhood development is LEED-certified at the Platinum level, which is the highest standard. The video above does a great job of telling the story, and we've included some of our favorite quotes from it below:

"To meet the Platinum standard requires commitments to all of the categories of LEED. It deals with sights, it deals with energy, it deals with equity, it deals with water savings and air quality indoor and outdoor. What this means to the community is this project provides more affordable housing than a conventional development, air quality is improved, CO2 levels are reduced.""For Ward Village to be the biggest LEED for Neighborhood Development Platinum-certified neighborhood in the country, it brings a lot to the state of Hawaii, it brings a lot to Honolulu, and it brings a lot of green building, forward-thinking concepts to this area."

"Anyone who has ever gone from driving to work an hour and a half every day to car-free living, it enriches your life in ways that you don't even expect. You get to know your community better, you're out walking, you're out cycling, you're healthier. There's infrastructure built in to help people to ride their bikes, bus stops close to your buildings, proximity to rail stations, storefronts are meant to engage the street, sidewalks are wider, there are more bike racks. All of these things add up to just provide a more connected master plan."

"An island has to be self-sustaining. You would think Hawaii would be out front on green building topics because cost of energy is high, water is precious, the green areas are precious, but I think projects like Ward Village LEED-ND and all of the LEED buildings within that, those are helping to have Honolulu and Hawaii leap-frog the mainland in terms of progress toward greener infrastructure and healthier environments. … This consolidated development gets everything you need at one place, jobs are centralized, so it keeps the bigger parts of Hawaii in a more natural state."
