5 Truly Unique Ways Hawaii Celebrates the Holidays

With the holidays coming to a close, we couldn't help but take a moment to reflect on how truly unique and lucky we are to celebrate the season here in the Islands.

Granted, you won't find much snow nor reindeer in the Aloha State, but you will holiday cheer dished out in droves. Below, we've compiled a list of five totally unique ways Hawai'i celebrates the holidays.

We Eat Sashimi On New Year's Eve

While so much of the world celebrates the New Year with champagne, we splurge on premium sashimi to greet the New Year here in Hawai'i. As a matter of fact, eating raw fish on New Year's is a tradition that dates back generations and is a central part of every New Year's Eve party. However, Hawai'i residents know that our insatiable appetite for New Year's often comes with a higher price tag. It's not uncommon to see prices for high-quality ahi rise by up to $10/pound due to increased demand.

Our Santa Arrives In An Outrigger

In other parts of the world, Santa makes his journey pulled by reindeer and a massive wooden sleigh. But in Hawai'i, he rolls in on a traditional outrigger canoe, the original mode of transportation for Polynesians. There are few things more heartwarming than watching Santa dock his outrigger while being swarmed by throngs of keiki.

We Take Our Holiday Lights Seriously

Just because we live in a secluded island chain doesn't mean we don't know how to get downright festive for the holidays. Every year, the city of Honolulu puts on awe-inspiring lights show near the capital. Complete with rides for the children, oversized versions of Santa (throwing a massive shaka) and Mrs. Clause, trolley tours and enough strands of lights to lasso the moon, the annual City Lights festival is a gathering for the whole island and never disappoints.

Yeah, We Can Ice Skate

So we've established that, despite being a remote Pacific Island chain, the spirit of the holidays is alive and well in the islands. But we've taken it a step further in recent years and have embraced outdoor ice skating. Yes, that may sound impossible, but it's alive and well at Ward Village's outdoor ice skating rink, which is both affordable and open to the public from 10 am to 10 pm through the holidays.

We Surf On Christmas

In many parts of the world, Christmas morning can be marked by cold, dreary weather. Not here. With an average temperature of 73 degrees during the month of December, it's a pastime for many families to hit the beach and catch a few waves together on Christmas day. That's right, we surf on Christmas! The beaches are always crowded as young boys and girls test out their new boards while mom and dad dig their toes into the sand and unwind from the holiday madness.
