Ben & Jerry & Han
The famous chain recently opened their latest Honolulu location at Ward Entertainment Center on Kamake'e Street complete with every adventurous flavor you've come to love from the eclectic creamery over the years. But what makes this particular location even more unique is how it's run by business owner Han Choong.
Choong, a Hawai'i local, works and resides right in the heart of Ward Village, giving him a 360-degree view of its commercial advantages.
"The biggest draw for us is that it's so centrally located, where practically everything and anything that we need is within a few miles of it," Choong says of calling Ward Village home. "Blaisdell Center is ever so close, as is Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island. Ward Center is already home to the best theater in town, and practically the only one that we go to. It's got great eateries, more on the way."
After his experience with purchasing a condominium here, it made perfect sense to Choong to do the same when it came to looking for a retail space.
"Having worked with [The Howard Hughes Corporation] as a retail tenant, it gave us the opportunity to experience the other side of the equation," says Choong. "The majority of the people involved has been nothing short of a class act. It's such a refreshing breath of air where you have representatives of the landlord all genuinely wanting to help you succeed. There are so many marketing programs that are available to merchants to take advantage off. One has to just ask and the marketing gurus will answer that call."
That sense of synergy is a commitment Ward Village demonstrates when working with all its tenants, whether its commercial retail, private real estate, or in the case of Choong, both. That mutually beneficial relationship is just the cherry on top to the Ben & Jerry's business owner.
Choong explains, "Whether it's a small 'mom and pop' store or a large national retail chain, that most valuable asset that comes from that relationship between landlord and tenant is that 'it' that makes retail magic. We were fortunate to find a great partner in Howard Hughes and we are proud to call Ward Village the new home for Ben & Jerry's."
