Big Bad Wolf Opens Flagship Store in Ward Village

Nestled in the heart of Ward Village stands Big Bad Wolf, an undeniably hip and progressive boutique.

With its black façade and sweeping gold signage, Big Bad Wolf is reminiscent of a street wear boutique you'd expect to find on Venice's Abbot Kinney or deep inside the hippest streets of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Except that this retail space isn't necessarily geared toward adults—it's for kids.

As the brainchild of Amy and Jasper Wong, who helped found and run the dynamic and ever-popular Pow! Wow! events, it should come as no surprise that Big Bad Wolf oozes cool. The concept to create a street wear-inspired boutique for children arose when the duo had their baby girl, Ella, and couldn't find a line of clothes that fit their family's collective style.

"When Ella was born, I was having trouble finding a line of children's clothes that represented her personality," recalls Amy. "I couldn't find anything. So I decided to create my own line of street wear for kids. It's not really cutesy, but has a fun edge to it. I draw a lot of inspiration from the artists we work with at Pow! Wow! Everything we create for Big Bad Wolf was unique, which was really important to us."

After a year of creating the brand, which they initially sold online and in other retail locations across the country, they recently moved into their current brick-and-mortar space in Ward Warehouse. "I've been working in retail almost all of my life," says Amy. "So to finally have an opportunity to merchandise and build my own store is a dream come true. It feels great to be the boss."

One quick glance through the store, with its seamless and clean merchandising, it's abundantly clear that Amy has found her calling. In addition to carrying their own line of clothing, Big Bad Wolf also features a mix of other kids' lines, small gifty items, an array of hip books, and other unique merchandise. To keep things fresh, every month they partner with a new artist to release a limited-edition children's tee. There's even miniature shopping carts specifically built for children who want to shop on their own—or at the least under the close eye of mom or dad.

"We've had a lot of really positive feedback since we opened our doors," says Amy.

While we specialize in creating a unique environment for kids with our street wear-inspired lines, there's also been quite a few parents who love to check us out for some of our other items as well. People can come into Big Bad Wolf looking to outfit their children, but they'll often leave with a little something special for them as well.

While Amy has expertly created a space for children that was both welcoming, reflective of their taste, and completely unique in Honolulu, Jasper—a renowned artist in his own right—has added his own flourish to the space. Along one of the walls stands an intricate black-and-white graffiti themed mural which he created before the space officially opened its doors.

As the store continues to grow, the duo plans to include numerous interactive workshops geared towards both parents and children. "We want to create an event where both parents and kids can come together and create something really fun and unique," said Jasper. "We want this to be more than just a retail destination, and we think that including events like that are a fun way to connect with our customers."

Moving forward, both Amy and Jasper plan on including Big Bad Wolf into their upcoming Pow! Wow! events with small collaborations and workshops. To stay up to speed on Big Bad Wolf, you can follow them online at BigBadWolfKids or on the brand's social media channels.
