bloom! 2019 Garden Festival
Thanks to Hawai‘i’s flora-favorable sub-tropical climate—not too hot, not too cold, and doused with plenty of rain—we’re fortunate enough to be surrounded by colorful, curious, and awe-inspiring flowers all year long. Red, yellow, and white hibiscus flowers greet us at almost every turn across the islands. Squatty, stocky plumeria trees yield scented bouquets in a variety of shapes and color patterns throughout summer and well into fall. And of course, there are orchids, which randomly spring up spikes of delicate inflorescence that seems to flit and flutter in the warm trade breeze. With so many native Hawaiian and exotic tropical flowers to be thankful for, we’re happy to celebrate all things flora at Ward Centre’s bloom! Garden Festival.
An annual tradition at Ward Village for nearly four decades, the free, family-friendly event will spring forth at Ward Centre on Friday, April 19 from 10:00am until 8:00pm, and again on Saturday, April 20, from 10:00am until 4:00pm. Join plant lovers, backyard garden enthusiasts, fellow green thumbs, flower aficionados, and horticulture professionals from the Hawaiian Anthurium Society and the Cactus & Succulent Society of Hawaii as they lead workshops, demonstrations, all-day plant sales, and, of course, some hands-on activities for the keiki, including poi pounding, lei weaving, and native seed planting to name just a few.
A free event guaranteed to make you stop and smell the roses, don’t miss the breathtaking displays of rare and exotic anthurium, succulents, and orchids. Once you’ve become sufficiently inspired, check out bloom’s legendary plant sale, featuring hundreds of different species of succulents, anthurium, orchids, tillandsia, desert rose, carnivorous pitcher plants, and many more Hawai‘i favorites. There will even be a fresh selection of haku, lei, and freshly trimmed tropical flowers for arrangements.
The bloom! Festival’s workshops are always a big draw. Learn about succulent care, participate in make-n-take wristlet making, lei-making and more. Ward Centre’s Kipuka, a space for cultural exchange, will be hosting free keiki workshops over the course of the two-day event. There are limited seats available for each session, filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Don’t forget to check out Bloom Bags at participating Ward Village merchants. Visit the bloom! event page for more information.
