Waiea & Anaha Take Shape

On a Tuesday morning in the heart of Honolulu's Ward Village, hundreds of construction workers carefully make their way through the framework, cement slabs, and beams that will forge Waiea, a residential tower that will serve as an anchor for the quickly developing community.

A few hundred yards down Auahi street, a similar scene unfolds - a small army of construction workers, cranes, and other equipment, neatly assembled to begin the day's work of constructing Anaha, another landmark residential tower in Ward Village. So what does it take to construct two of Honolulu's most majestic residential developments? As it turns out, a lot of attention to detail and a jaw-dropping amount of concrete.

The face of Waiea, with its stunning glass façade, is beginning to sparkle. As of this fall, construction crews have installed more than 2,100 glass panels to the building's exterior. When completed, Waiea will feature 174 residences. To sculpt something of this nature, the utmost of attention to detail and a battalion of craftsmen (there are currently more than 300 workers on the construction site) are required.

"The future of Ward is unbelievable. It's going to create so many jobs for the community and it's really going to serve as a gathering place. We're right across from the beach park at Ala Moana in one of the most beautiful places in Honolulu," said Nathan Lutz, Health Safety Environmental Coordinator for Nordic PCL, Waiea's General Contractor. To date, construction teams have formed 28 levels and have poured more than 35,000 cubic yards of concrete—that's enough to fill close to 4,000+ cement trucks!

Across the street, you'll find Anaha is quickly coming to life too. The design of this building is unlike anything else you'll find in Honolulu. Envisioned with a careful consideration for both sophistication and sustainability by architectural firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz, Anaha features more than 300 diverse units, flats, and townhomes.

This month, a major milestone for the construction crew occurred: the first of 5,000+ glass panels are being installed! Concrete has been poured on the 9th floor of the residential tower and the 3rd floor of the townhomes, a

ll being done with the utmost of care.

"What makes Howard Hughes' construction truly extraordinary is the attention to detail and that starts at groundbreaking," said Rob Centra, Senior Vice President, Design and Construction Management at The Howard Hughes Corporation. As construction on these two towers continues to progress, it's expected that more than 1,000 workers will be involved in the building of both projects at their peak. "The guys on the job, they really feel that they are important to the final product," added Centra. "We spend a lot of time and effort on quality control and inspections and the tradesmen really take pride in that."
