Hopscotch: The Perfect Baby Boutique
While you spend nine months of your life tediously preparing to become a mother, you've yet to find the perfect baby boutique that fits your personality.
No matter how hard you looked, the perfect one-stop shop for both mom and baby didn't seem to exist in the city. So what's a new mom to do?
It was precisely this conundrum that led Jayne Lee to open Hopscotch, her baby boutique located in Ward Village in 2015. In the ensuing year since she first opened her doors, it turns out that she's tapped into a niche and has developed a loyal stream of customers eager to waltz into motherhood in style.
After having my first daughter I realized a lot of the products I really liked weren't available in Hawaii. I would have to order it online. Friends and other people would stop me and ask where I purchased these products I was using for my daughter, just little things like her snack containers. So I saw an opportunity there and decided to open up Hopscotch, baby/children's boutique in Ward Centre.
While the prospect of having a baby and opening a boutique may sound daunting to some, Lee wasn't too fazed. As it turns out, this wasn't her first foray into retail as she also owns another Ward Village boutique, Dolce. As she began concepting the store, Lee knew she had to make Hopscotch about more than just babies, it should cater to moms as well.
"We like to think of ourselves as a lifestyle boutique for both mommy and child," adds Lee. "We have the essentials for new moms, such as nursing covers, mommy hooks for strollers and tummy butter. For baby, we have a range of products that run the gamut from teethers to onesies. We also carry some really cute toys and clothing for toddlers and make a real effort to highlight made-in-Hawai‘i brands, which our customers really appreciate."
Now, with nearly two years behind her at Hopscotch, Lee, the consummate entrepreneur, continues to keep her eyes peeled for the next big thing for her store. If it's made in the Islands, that's especially good. But before anything makes it on to the floor, nearly all of her merchandise has to make it through her own personal testing ground—her own home. "Practically all the products at Hopscotch have been used on my own children," she says with a laugh. "That's my first test!"
