Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Take a moment to look around the city this February and chances are, you'll be seeing red—red and gold to be exact.

Red banners with gold Chinese calligraphy wave in the breeze, red decorative firecrackers hanging in storefront doorways to keep evil spirits away, and red dog statues of all sizes, emblazoned with golden script and ornate designs, bring luck and fortune during the coming year. Want to keep that luck from running out? Tuck a crisp, new one-dollar bill into a red paper lai see envelope and feed it to the lion after the mesmerizing lion dance. For decades, Chinese new year has been celebrated in the city, and we look forward to welcoming in the new year with a vigorous Kung Hei Fat Choi! As you gear up for the celebrations, here's a few things you should know about this amazing tradition.

Living Legacy

Chinese immigrants have long been an integral part of Hawai'i's cultural history, even dating back to the years just after Captain Cook's arrival in the Hawaiian archipelago. Most Chinese immigrants arrived in the mid to late nineteenth century and worked as laborers at the sugar plantations. Many found luck and success in Hawai'i. When plantation work contracts expired, many families remained in Honolulu, settling in what is now known as Chinatown and its surrounding communities.

It's the Year of the Dog

Preparations for Chinese New Year 2018—also known as lunar new year because the Chinese lunar calendar follows the cycles of the moon—begin on February 8 and last until New Year's Eve. The Year of the Dog officially begins on February 16, Chinese New Year. The dog is also an earth sign, making 2018 a good year to focus on real estate, agriculture, and the environment. In the Chinese zodiac pantheon of animal signs, the dog is the 11th zodiac sign and is associated with the coming of winter.

New Wave Friday

Fortunately, winter is not something to worry about in Hawai'i. In fact, Ward Village is celebrating Chinese New Year and the coming of the Year of the Dog with a very special New Wave Friday on February 16. Now a quarterly event held here at Ward Village, New Wave Friday connects local vendors specializing in unique merchandise with savvy customers. It's a family-friendly opportunity to get to know the artisans, enjoy food and live entertainment, and best of all, activities and shopping exclusives.

In celebration of Chinese New Year, New Wave Friday will be decorated in red and gold and Ward Village stores are ready to celebrate, with special activations and a lion dance. At South Shore Market, Art Explorium is inviting keiki to join in an Earth-friendly, Chinese New Year art activity station. Lucy's Lab Creamery is debuting a new flavor for Chinese New Year: the Firecracker Float, a red almond float topped with pop rocks. (Yummers!) Stop by the Toyota booth to design your own mini manapua! And Twins Islands will be offering a 20 percent discount for anyone wearing red. At Ward Centre, Downtown Gifthings is hosting a Year of the Dog photo booth, so bring that pooch along for luck and a couple snapshots to put on the fridge. POSHd By Valerie Joseph is giving away lucky lai see red envelopes containing coupons for up to 40 percent off merchandise.

RSVP in advance for New Wave Friday—Chinese New Year at South Shore Marketplace from 5pm–9pm and get a Ward Village lai see red envelope with a special gift when you check in at New Wave Friday. You could win a $50 Ward Village Gift Card. Lucky you!
