Reflections on Anaha

With its progressive design, stunning features, and idyllic location, Ward Village's residential tower, Anaha, is changing the architectural landscape of Honolulu.

Standing tall at 1108 Auahi Street, Anaha—which translates into Reflection of Light in Hawaiian—incorporates the creativity and architectural know-how of renowned firms Solomon Cordwell Buenz and Woods Bagot, all the while paying homage to the natural beauty of Honolulu. The end result is a stunning tower, complete with 311 residences, townhomes, flats, and penthouses with an iconic floor-to-ceiling window grid that's sure to leave the city swooning. To boot, Anaha, will be LEED BD+C certified, meaning that the tower is nearly as energy efficient as possible. And while the physical construction and amenities included in the building are impressive, what's equally inspiring is the way the story of the land and people who once lived in the Ward area were incorporated into the building of Anaha.

"My ancestors lived on this land," proudly said Moani Kaleikini, during the groundbreaking ceremony. "We see this building as connecting the past with the future. With this in mind, we have chose the name 'Anaha,' which means reflection. Reflection of the light; reflection of the past; reflections on how the past can be better taken care of in the future."

According to Ward Village's Todd Apo, in addition to the cultural ties that went into naming Anaha, the building's design also serves as a reflection of its surroundings. "All of our efforts at Ward Village are grounded in the past, giving respect to our nature and those who came before us. Anaha not only pays homage to the past, but it's design also represents the waves of the Pacific Ocean through its rolling glass windows."

Located on the ground floor of Anaha, residents and guests will be privy to not only one of the most appealing towers in the city, but also a myriad of nearby dining options, including the island-inspired and award-winning cuisine of Peter Merriman's namesake restaurant which will occupy 6,000 square feet and seat around 200 guests.

"I think that being in the heart of all the new development that's happening here in Kaka'ako and the fact that it is going to be an urban concept is really exciting for us," Merriman told Pacific Business News. "For our Merriman's group of restaurants, this is the next logical progression for us to get into an urban environment, and we've been wanting to get to Oahu for forever," Merriman added. "We just wanted to make sure that we were in a place that we felt was right for us. Being in Kakaako and with the Howard Hughes Corp. people, everything seemed to fit."

Adjacent to Anaha, you'll also find a flagship Whole Foods Marketplace where you'll be able to shop for the freshest organic and responsibly sourced groceries and produce on the island. Heading makai, you'll also find that you're but a short walk to the forthcoming rail stop, which makes commuting to and from work a cinch. And when you're not enjoying your new residence, you'll have a wealth of green spaces and a Central Plaza at your fingertips, not to mention a sea of surf and located just across the street at Ala Moana Beach Park, and a litany of shops and boutiques well within walking distance.

With great strides being made on the construction of Anaha every day, we won't have to wait long until the building enters its final phase of development with a planned opening in 2017. Until then, we'll marvel at the expansion of this special neighborhood. "The architecture within Ward Village is one of the most exciting parts of what's to come," added Apo. "We're able to tell the history of these lands through the design of our buildings: stories of ancient Hawaiian fishermen, the turn of the waves off of Kewalos, and the aeʻo bird that used to inhabit the region, these are all incorporated into the design of our buildings. It's because of those stories—told by world-class architects—that Ward Village is reshaping Honolulu's skyline."
