From "Beyond the Surface"

Jun 13, 2018

Summer of Stoke

Legendary surf moviemaker Bruce Brown grew up in Long Beach, California, surfing Los Angeles and Orange County beach breaks in the late 1940s.

Like all the other young surfing fans at the time, Brown and his buddies would flock to the local Elk's Club auditorium whenever the original surf filmmaker Bud Browne rolled into town with a new surf flick. Bruce would go on to create the most iconic surf movie of all time, The Endless Summer, which was officially released in 1966 after two years of previewing the film on the beach-city circuit to thousands of surf-stoked youth. This summer, Courtyard Cinema at Ward Village honors that same intrepid, saltwater-infused spirit that brought surfing to celluloid so many years ago. We're calling it the Summer Slide and we're paying homage to the islands' favorite past time by previewing three distinct surf flicks. Outside, under the stars, by the ocean, and with hundreds of movie lovers and surf fans, Courtyard Cinema is proud to present three modern day surf films, a sun-drenched selection of Hawaii International Film Festival curated films. So hoot, cheer, awe, laugh, and cringe out loud at every wipeout, because surfing is the ultimate expression, and that is how surf films are meant to be experienced.

Beyond the Surface (June 28)

Release in 2014 to critical acclaim, Beyond the Surface was filmed by award winning cinematographer and O'ahu resident Dave Homcy, and features his wife, artist and surfer Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, fellow wave riders Liz Clark, Lauren Hill, Emi Koch, and Kate Baldwin. Set in India, the story follow Ishita Malaviya, India's first female surfer, as they journey though southern India sharing experience and stories about surfing, yoga, and ecological awareness. Of course, they're also searching for the perfect waves and scoring some vibrant Indian Ocean gems. RSVP for your free tickets.

Given (July 12)

Given follows the journey of surf family Aamion and Daize Goodwin as they explore new waves and new cultures through 15 different countries. The contemplative story of the Goodwin's family legacy (hint: Aamion's father was a globe-trekking surfer as well) is told by their six-year-old son, unearthing the deep meaning behind the family's need to find new waves and fulfill their calling. It's a story about the meaning of home paralleled with a reverence for nature, set in wave after wave of visually stunning oceanic imagery. The touching piece explores a young boy's understanding of life that is centered on all the ocean has to offer. RSVP to reserve your seat (tickets are free!).

Bella Vita (July 19)

When one thinks of Italy, the first things that come to mind are usually wine and pizza. In this award-winning indie surf film, surfer, artist and environmentalist Chris Del Moro rises above the stereotypes and explores the culture and passions of the Italian people as he is reunited with his ancestral homeland. In a beautiful landscape preserved like a Roman ruin and captured on stunning 35mm film, surfing is still a counter culture endeavor and merely one path to achieving the good life. During his journey of self discovery, Del Moro meets up with traveling professional surfers and Italy's first World Surf League professional surfer, Leonardo Fioravanti, to sample Italy's groomed surf, while recounting the region's surf history. RSVP to save your seat (tickets are free).
