The Perfect Day in Ward with Salvage Public

Napali Souza, one of the founders of the successful surf-inspired brand Salvage Public, recently sat down with us to discuss the ins and outs of what a perfect day in the Village looks like to him.

From the boutique's location at South Shore Market, Napali is able to make the most that all Ward Village has to offer, weaving in work with pleasure and fun at every occasion. From the looks of it, we could all take a page out of Napali's playbook.

Start the Day in the Water

My day begins pretty early, especially if there's a swell. I'll try and surf most days when the waves are good. Because our shop at South Shore Market is so close to a few of my favorite waves, I'll try and surf in the morning before work. My go-to spot is Kaisers, which is just around the corner from Ward Village and Ala Moana Bowls. Kewalos is another great wave that's right here at Ward Village as well. But I'm a firm believer that starting your day off on the right foot is really important, and I can't think of a better way to start off the workday than an early morning surf at one of my favorite waves.

Time to Work and Catch Up with the Neighborhood

After I've finished my morning surf, I'll head back down to the shop for work. A typical workday for me could vary tremendously depending on what project we've got on our hands. One day we could be looking at fabric and designs and the next we're troubleshooting a project in Japan. But I love what we do and working with my partners, Joe and Noah, makes work feel fun. Between work, I try and make a point to say whatsup to some of the neighbors at South Shore Market. We're good friends with the crew from Cameron and it's always nice to catch up with them. It feels like a comunity here and that's important to me.

Grab A Bite in the Village

For lunch, I'll try and mix it up whenever I can, but Kakaako Kitchen is always a favorite, so don't be surprised to see me there grinding. But I also like to mix it up as well. Sometimes, I'll opt for an acai bowl from Mocha Java. They make a really great one and there's always a nice crew working there. But there's a growing list of restaurants in the area and depending on what I'm craving, there's always something good to eat.

Pau Hana Yoga with Friends

After work, a lot of us will head down to CorePower Yoga for an evening class. It's a great setup, because I can literally walk a few steps from our shop and be there. There's also the free classes at the IBM Building as well, which I've never been to, but I heard are really cool. I've got to check that out. But yeah, afternoon yoga is always a great way to end the work day and CorePower is a great place to shake off the work day and transition into the evening.

Kick Back Over a Delicious Meal

For dinner, there's a lot of great options at Ward, but I have to say that I'm a huge Piggy Smalls fan. I love that place. It's hard to find something you don't love there. That being said, the Phostrami sandwich and just about any of their pho are my go-to. It's so great to see that a local family can become such a huge success like they have. They've really taken the food scene up a level through their Ward Village restaurant, Chinatown location, and their farmers' market.
