What Makes A Good City? Amenities

As people across the country begin moving back into cities in search of a more convenient life, it can often be difficult to find the perfect neighborhood to call home.

While one neighborhood may boast a reputation for being convenient and walkable, another may offer better schools—making for a difficult decision when it comes to choosing a city (or town) to call home. Real estate website Trulia, has done the groundwork and hit the books for you. Recently, they released their rankings of the the best neighborhoods in large, medium, and small cities across the country, based on the amenities they offer. At the top of the list for small cities, was none other than our burgeoning community right here in the Ward, Ala Moana, and Kaka'ako area.

In a country with more than 35,000 cities and towns and more than 300,000,000 citizens, how can you possibly pick just one city to top the list? As it turns out, the answer isn't simple, but the team at Trulia created an algorithm to search their database and examine certain metrics that make neighborhoods desirable.

"To find out where the Best Neighborhoods for families are, we cranked through the neighborhood amenities data on our site and created a ranking based on key metrics. For this we evaluated playgrounds, pediatricians, child care, and percentage of quiet streets per square mile, which we then combined to create a weighted average of each neighborhood's ranking," wrote Trulia about their study.

"We also only looked at neighborhoods that are between one and two square miles in area—neighborhoods large enough to have a decent number of live-well features, but small enough to actually feel like a neighborhood. The index ranges from 0 – 100, with 100 being the best scoring and 0 being the worst."

From there, Trulia broke down their list to categorize neighborhoods, ranked by size, with the best overall amenities for families and singles. Ward Village, as a part of the Ala Moana, Kaka'ako area received recognition as the best neighborhood in a small city with overall amenities, and the second best neighborhood in a small city with amenities for small families.

From a wealth of shops and restaurants to parks and green spaces, mixed in with a plethora of community events and fitness/stay-active options, we're understandable thrilled

While we're understandably thrilled, the truth is that we've known just how special this blossoming neighborhood has for quite some time. Not only are we brimming with amenities that include a wealth of shops, restaurants, community events, and more, all within walking distance, there's also one of Honolulu's favorite parks and beaches located just across the street. Whether it's the expansive green space and parks interwoven into our community, the close proximity to downtown and Waikiki, the forthcoming rail line or the new residential towers that are quickly coming to life, Ward is truly on the up and it seems that the entire world is taking notice.
