Waiea Reaches A Milestone

After breaking ground in May of 2014, Ward Village's iconic residential tower, Waiea, is nearing completion.

As the first residential tower to be erected in Ward Village, Waiea represents more than the hundreds of glass panels, thousands of hours in construction efforts, and tons of cement used to manifest the building. Waiea, which translates into "water of life" is symbolic of a new life being breathed into this historic and culturally significant land, the forerunner for what is rapidly becoming a new gathering place and thriving community in the heart of Honolulu.

"I'm thrilled to say that we're topping off Waiea soon," says Rob Centra, Senior VP of Design and Construction Management. "This means that we're nearly finished completing the structure and pouring the concrete. It's a milestone moment for the building and the community here at Ward and I couldn't be more proud. We still have some work to do before we officially finish the building in the next six months, but it's a very exciting time for everyone who worked to so hard to create Waiea."

Designed by renowned Vancouver-based architect James K. M. Cheng, in collaboration with Rob Iopa and Honolulu-based WCIT Architecture, careful consideration of the history of the land and a commitment to sustainability was made to take Waiea from a conceptual phase to the proud building that stands vigil over Auahi Street today. To manifest the tower, Waiea's designers took inspiration from a Native Hawaiian tale depicting a pair of fisherman, a father and son, who taught the people of the islands to fish.

"According to Hawaiian mythology, there was a father and a son who went through all of the islands—including right here at this location at Waiea—to teach the people proper fishing techniques, which included stewardship of the sea and net-making," said Race Randle VP of the Howard Hughes Corporation. "Waiea, from an abstract standpoint, is meant to depict the pair. From the ocean, looking toward the tower, you'll see the father with a fishing net draped over his shoulder, waiting to throw. That was the thesis for this design, and that's why the building has this waving nature to it. The building rises up out of the water like someone standing in the shallows, ready to throw their net. You'll even notice that the building itself flares out a bit towards the bottom. That's actually meant to signify the way the net would naturally extend."

At the core of the new community being developed at Ward Village, there's an unyielding commitment to sustainability and minimizing the impact on the land and all future developments, including Waiea, are pushing for LEED certification.

Complete with 171 residences that range from one, two or three bedrooms, spacious, tasteful interiors, and 36 floors, Waiea represents a new standard of sophistication in Honolulu and we're pleased to welcome her to the community. "This building has really captured my heart," added Centra. "Even today, after working on it for countless hours, I can't help but look at its gorgeous glass façade and smile. It's going to be an iconic building in this city."
