Welcoming Anaha With A Blessing
November 8 wasn't just another Saturday in the sun for the future Ward Village community.
Instead, shortly after the sky brightened, a group of about 75 people gathered for an intimate ceremony at the future location of Ward Village's second mixed-use tower, Anaha. Kaanohi Kalekini and her family, cultural descendants of the area, led the blessing, and team members of the Ward Village development broke ground with traditional Hawaiian digging sticks. For all who attended, including owners of future Anaha residences, it was an incredibly moving occasion.
After the groundbreaking, about 250 people gathered for a "Paina for Anaha" celebration, described as "a reflection on the history of this land," at the Ward Village Information Center Courtyard. Future Anaha owners, family, friends, and Howard Hughes employees were welcomed by a trio of island beauties including Miss Hawaii USA Moani Hara, then entered along a red carpet to live music performed by award-winning Teresa Bright.
Entertainment continued throughout the night, including a performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band and music by legendary Robert Cazimero, to which his halau, "Na Kamalei," danced enchanting hula. Additionally, guests enjoyed learning about Hawaiian art and culture such as awa and gourd making, lauhala weaving, wood carving, and stone carving from talented Hawaiian artists and cultural practitioners.
When partygoers weren't spellbound by artists, musicians, and hula dancers, or wrapped up in conversation, they hit the buffet. Guests dined on a sumptuous array of island favorites, including a poke and oyster bar from Oahu's Poke Stop; cuisine inspired by traditional luau fare from Hale Aina Catering; and delicate tropical desserts from MW Restaurant.
The day, from bright and early at 8 a.m. until the sun set and the last of the event-goers headed home, was a true celebration of the story of Anaha, and the traditions that shape our unique island home.
