Welcome to Rice Fest 2018
Did you know that rice is one of the oldest known foods still widely consumed today?
It's been a staple for human beings across the globe for more than 7,000 years and it remains a daily favorite here in the Islands. Whether it's a scoop of white rice next to sweet kalbi, the rice at the bottom of a heaping poke bowl, or homemade fried rice with all the leftovers, it can't be denied that Hawai'i is head over heels in love with every one of the grain's culinary configurations.
With that in mind, we welcome you to come celebrate rice in all its forms at the ninth annual Hawaii Rice Festival at Ward Centre on Saturday, September 22, a free event for the entire family. Bring your reusable chopsticks and a healthy appetite to taste rice dishes from around the world. Local restaurants and food trucks will be offering an array of themed dishes, cooking demonstrations will provide insight on specific rice dishes, and three rice-eating competitions will have the hungry hankering for another mouthful.
The fun begins at 3:00pm with live entertainment by the Ukulele Hale Jammers and all the rice dishes you can eat. Lanakila Kitchen's Chef Frank Chun kicks off the festival with a step-by-step cooking demonstration. After working up an appetite, check out the popular rice-eating contests. The fourth annual Pā'ina Café Poke Bowl Eating Competition goes down at 6:30pm. At 7:30pm, bring your grind game to the second annual Rainbow Drive-In Loco Moco Eating Competition. Or save it all up for the ninth annual SPAM Musubi Eating Competition, presented by nom nom. Whoever can put down the most SPAM musubi in the allotted time will win a trip for two to Las Vegas.
If you've got the stomach to enter any one of the eating contests, visit the entertainment stage hospitality tent by 5:00pm. Contestants will be offered a space in one eating contest on a first-come, first-served basis.
Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii will wrap up the night with a moving taiko drumming performance. This year's festival also raises awareness for Lanakila Pacific's Meals on Wheels, O'ahu's oldest and largest island-wide meal service for seniors. Brown rice donations will be accepted for Lanakila Meals on Wheels at the Lanakila Pacific, VH07V, and Channel808 booths during the entire event.
