Designed for the Future

You may have noticed that we've been busy lately. All around this dynamic neighborhood, change is underway.

New homeowners have moved in, hip local boutiques have sprouted up, and some of the state's most renowned restaurateurs have hung their billet at Ward Village. But amid all of this development, the community has never lost sight of its responsibility to create a healthy, vibrant destination where terms like "environmentally conscious" and "sustainable" aren't just buzzwords, but ways of life.

Landmark of Sustainability

By including an array of sustainable strategies, the community had to be designed to be conscious of walkability by including pedestrian-oriented design; efficient land use in conjunction with mass transit systems; water and energy efficiency; recycling and reuse of materials; indoor environmental quality; efficient parking; and working closely with Bikeshare Hawaii. Upon the completion of the final residential tower, the neighborhood will include approximately 4,000 residential units and over one million square feet of retail and commercial space. This means that thousands of people will be able to step outside their residences and work, eat, shop, and enjoy ample outdoor recreation all within walking distance. Less driving means less pollution. More time outdoors leads to a better quality of life. It's what Ward Village calls Village Life.

Outdoors and In-Step

Car-free living is the cornerstone of our DNA. That's why the community has created indoor and outdoor environments that create a better quality of life for residents and visitors alike. It all starts with walkability and access to alternative modes of transportation, like Bikeshare Hawaii—better known as Biki—and The Bus. As it becomes more convenient to walk down to the corner to grab a bite to eat, or to jog across the street to the beach for a swim, then the community as whole can benefit from less traffic and decreased air pollution. Of course, the neighborhood is designed to take advantage of the new rail system when it comes on line.

Throughout Ward Village you'll find an infrastructure designed for people, not cars. Bike safety and pedestrian access are priorities. Bike lanes, ample bike parking, and Biki stations make getting around quick, efficient, and increase our collective health and wellness. The neighborhoods utilize wider sidewalks set apart from streets with native or water-wise landscaping. And the storefronts are accessible and engage the streets to promote neighborhood walkability. To promote outdoor recreation, we're delighted to host community events like Courtyard Yoga, Courtyard Cinema, and larger-than-life art installation.

Grind It

You can't really enjoy the Village Life without great food, and Ward Village is procuring a diverse array of some of the best eateries in Honolulu, from mouth-watering desserts and everything in between. Diversity, flavor, and health are celebrated every day when local chefs create handmade meals using local ingredients inspired by culinary traditions from around the world. Grab a unique breakfast with a fresh homemade biscuit at Scratch Kitchen and Meatery. Sample the finest in "New Japanese" from Nobu Honolulu. Freak out over Vietnamese fusion from Piggy Smalls. And don't forget to grab ice cream at Lucy's Lab Creamery.

Off to Market

If sustainability matters to you, then you know it takes a little effort, and a little home cooking, to eat as healthy as possible. Stop by the Kaka'ako Farmers' Market to pick fresh fruits, vegetables, value-added goodies, and prepared foods from local farmers and vendors. And coming down the pipeline, Whole Foods Market will also anchor the community with groceries and friendly conversation in the wine isle.

Add up the long-term design strategies, the sustainable buildings, the pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, the recreational activities, the car-free living, and the great food and restaurants, and Village Life is obviously redefining what it is to live "the good life."
