Meet Your Neighbor: Lee Wang
We spoke with Lee Wang of Lucy's Lab Creamery!
Name: Lee Wang
Job Title: Owner
Store: Lucy's Lab Creamery
What inspired you to start Lucy's Lab?
The love of ice cream and the love of my mom. One of my fondest memories as a kid was making ice cream with my mom. I remember her buying this red hand churner from a thrift store and both of us struggling (and laughing) through the instructions. I think the first time we did it, we put salt instead of sugar in the cream but it was so incredibly fun. My mom battled cancer from 2007 to 2012 and it was a difficult span for both of us. Through the ups and downs, we got a lot closer and I grew as a man. Our time together was incredibly special to me and I wanted a meaningful way to remember her strength and beauty. Thus, Lucy's was born.
What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
Black Sesame! It's so rich and nutty, there's nothing like it.
What's your favorite podcast or TV show?
My all time favorite show is Breaking Bad and I'm addicted to the podcast Freakonomics.
What are three things on your bucket list?
Eat dinner in Sicily overlooking a Mediterranean sunset, make the 40-under-40 list, and help a friend accomplish a lifelong goal.
Lucy's Lab just celebrated a 4-year anniversary. What's the biggest lesson you've learned since starting the business?
You juggle a lot when growing a business but the most important factor is people. Working with and being around great people makes all the inevitable ups and downs worthwhile and fun. We've been incredibly lucky in this aspect.
What's the craziest flavor you've ever featured at Lucy's Lab (in your opinion)?
Char Siu has been the most interesting one this year. Everyone seems to be shocked and/or confused at first glance (and even after first taste).
