Free Monthly Community Event to Showcase Hawaiian Music and Hula

HONOLULU (April 13, 2015) – Ward Village®, a master planned neighborhood by The Howard Hughes Corporation® (NYSE: HHC) today introduced Kona Nui Nights, a free monthly cultural event that will treat guests to an evening of live entertainment under the stars. The outdoor concert series will feature popular Hawaiian musicians and hula hālau on the fourth Sunday of each month from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ward Village Information Center Courtyard.

"Hawaiian culture plays an integral role in our community at Ward Village, and we look forward to perpetuating Hawaiian culture by showcasing local artists and hula hālau from across the state at our Kona Nui Nights concert series," said Katie Ka'anapu, Director of Community and Retail Marketing at Ward Village. "Kona Nui Nights joins a growing offering of free public events at Ward Village, where we are dedicated to providing a gathering place for the entire community."

Kona Nui Nights will feature a Ka'ea Lyons as its bi-lingual emcee, who will host the program in both English and 'Ōlelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian). The concert series, which is curated by Ward Village's cultural advisor, Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, will premiere on Sunday, April 26 with contemporary Hawaiian musician Weldon Kekauoha, a Na Hoku Hanohano award winner, and Hula Hālau Ka Pa Hula O Ka Lei Lehua.

"Kona Nui Nights will seek to honor our special connection to Hawaiian culture, language, and history, as it was told through the mele (songs) and hula of the Ward and Honolulu areas," said Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, Cultural Advisor at Ward Village. "The name of this event was chosen with care. 'Kona,' which means the southern district of an island, is paired with the word 'Nui' to bring emphasis to our urban southern city – the social and economic hub of O'ahu."

Kona Nui Nights is a free, all-ages event open to the public and begins at 4 p.m. In addition to the stellar live entertainment, the event will feature food trucks, seasonal activities and a cash bar. Limited seating is provided however guests are welcome to bring their own seating. Guests will also have an opportunity to peruse the Ward Village Information Center, located on the ground floor of the building.
