The Howard Hughes Corporation Responds to Community Input and Market Demand Introduces Plans for Next Development of Homes

HONOLULU (September 27, 2016) – The Howard Hughes Corporation® (NYSE: HHC) today announced plans to bring the next 750 homes to its 60-acre master planned community in Honolulu, Ward Village®. ʻAʻaliʻi, a mixed-use condominium development, is the next step in building a comprehensive urban neighborhood with a dynamic and diverse collection of residential offerings along with retail, dining, entertainment and community gathering experiences in a pedestrian-friendly setting.

ʻAʻaliʻi will broaden the selection of new homes at Ward Village with studio, one- and two-bedroom residences and will include at least 100 units below market prices under the Hawai'i Community Development Authority (HCDA)'s Reserved Housing Program. The proposed site, located makai of Queen Street next to Aeʻo and the flagship Whole Foods Market, which are currently under construction, will include up to 15,000 square feet of new street-level retail, 19,000 square feet of public open space for the neighborhood and one acre of recreation amenities for residents. The project is being designed by award-winning architect and design firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz, which designed the Anaha® condominium tower, in coordination with local architecture firm Ferraro Choi & Associates.

The creation of 'A'ali'i is a result of community input and strong market demand for new homes in Honolulu's most walkable community. As a result of this input, amenities planned include a state-of-the-art penthouse fitness center, swimming pool, playground, barbecue pavilions, dog park, storage facilities, bicycle storage and a striking rooftop lānai with ocean views for entertaining family and friends. Based upon some of the specific feedback, both private and community gathering spaces have been created at the pool level as well as on the rooftop lānai.

"We recognize from our success with Ke Kilohana and Aeʻo that there is a demand for additional homes at Ward Village priced to appeal to kama'āina who want to live, work and play in this vibrant community," said Todd Apo, Vice President of Community Development for The Howard Hughes Corporation. "During the early planning stages of ʻAʻaliʻi, we held community meetings with hundreds of prospective residents to elicit feedback on what was most important to their lifestyles. We then designed homes and amenities that will provide the comfort and convenient lifestyle they seek."

In keeping with Ward Village's commitment to honor the cultural significance of the area, The Howard Hughes Corporation consulted with cultural experts – artist Sig Zane, Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu and recognized cultural descendants of the area – to name the new building. Inspired by the native ʻaʻaliʻi plant recognized for its beauty and ability to flourish in a variety of conditions, the name symbolizes the strength of those who will choose to make ʻAʻaliʻi their home, who together will strengthen the Ward Village community.

Ka'anohi Kaleikini, a prominent leader and recognized cultural descendant for the lands that make up Ward Village, shared her excitement for this development. "I have watched these lands for decades and am excited about ʻAʻaliʻi because it is a new opportunity for our kama'āina to return to Kukuluāe'o and bring new life and a new future to the region," said Kaleikini. "I was immediately touched when the name was shared with me because of the connection of the ʻaʻaliʻi plant to Victoria Ward and her family."

With continued confirmation from the real estate industry, public sector and community that there is strong demand for additional housing inventory, ʻAʻaliʻi will introduce a new supply of homes within Honolulu's urban core that will appeal to a broad spectrum of the local population.

Plans for ʻAʻaliʻi have been submitted to the Hawai'i Community Development Authority for approval. Hearings are expected to be held in November. With a timely approval, home sales could begin in 2017.

Ward Village is Hawaiʻiʻs only LEED-Neighborhood Development Platinum-Certified project and the largest neighborhood development in the country to receive such a prestigious certification. Kaka'ako was recently named by Trulia as the top neighborhood with the best amenities in cities of under one million people.
