"Mr. Pipeline" to Host Free Yoga Session, Talk Story and Book Signing at Ward Village on Saturday, Oct. 10
HONOLULU (Sept. 30, 2015) – Ward Village®, a neighborhood being revitalized by The Howard Hughes Corporation® (NYSE: HHC), and Patagonia® will host surfing legend Gerry Lopez for two free events on Saturday, Oct. 10, including a yoga class and talk story session.
"We are honored to welcome Gerry Lopez, an icon in the surfing community and a true embodiment of the healthy, active, coastal lifestyle to Ward Village for these exciting events."
The public is invited to meet Lopez at two events on Saturday, Oct. 10. From 9 to 10:30 a.m., Lopez will host a yoga class for practitioners of all levels. Later that evening from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Lopez will host a talk story session and book signing of his book, "Surf Is Where You Find It," a collection of essays about his surfing experiences. Both events will be held in the courtyard of the Ward Village Information Center (former IBM Building). Admission is free, with registration required and available here.
"Surfing and yoga teach us about living a life in harmony with nature," said Gerry Lopez. "Every time we paddle out or stand on our mat, there is something to be learned."
Lopez, who was born in Honolulu, is widely recognized as the best tube rider in the world. Known to many as "Mr. Pipeline," he won the Pipeline Masters competition in 1972 and 1973, which has since been named the Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters. He is also a surfboard designer and shaper and has played an important role in the industry of commercial surfboard manufacturing. He has worked as an actor in several films and is an ambassador for Patagonia.
As Hawai'i's only LEED for Neighborhood Development Platinum-Certified project and the largest neighborhood development in the country to receive such a prestigious sustainability certification, Ward Village will employ its wholesome lifestyle with pedestrian-friendly streets, a convenient grocery store, daily needs retail, new parks and open spaces, shaded sidewalks, and more, which can already be experienced firsthand on Auahi Street alongside TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack and Pier 1 Imports.
Ward Village also hosts complimentary yoga sessions regularly at its Ward Village Yoga Series, held every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ward Village Information Center Courtyard. Each class welcomes up to 50 yogis of all skill levels on a first come, first served basis for a fun, fast-paced session with CorePower Yoga instructors.
About Ward Village®
Developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation, Ward Village is a new 60-acre coastal master planned community in the heart of Honolulu located between downtown and Waikīkī in the Kakaʻako district. Ward Village includes two mixed-use residential towers – Waiea and Anaha – that are now under construction and will transform the popular shopping and dining district into a vibrant neighborhood that offers exceptional residences with incredible island and ocean views and a carefully curated mix of retail experiences set among dynamic public open spaces and walkable streets.
This growing community will include three additional developments: Ae'o at 1001 Queen Street, Gateway Towers and Ke Kilohana at 988 Halekauwila Street. Aeʻo at 1001 Queen Street is a 466-unit mixed-use condominium tower anchored by a flagship Whole Foods Market. The extraordinary first building of Gateway Towers on Ala Moana Boulevard will bring the architecture of world-renowned architect Richard Meier to the Honolulu skyline. Ke Kilohana will bring housing targeted for local residents and a 23,000 square foot Long's Drugs to the neighborhood.
The vision for Ward Village is consistent with the master plan approved by the HCDA in 2009, which allows for up to 9.3 million square feet of mixed-use development and will include over 4,000 residences and over 1 million square feet of retail space.
Ward Village is Hawaiʻi's only LEED-ND Platinum-Certified project and the largest neighborhood development in the country to receive such a prestigious certification.
