Mauka-Makai by Kauaʻi-based artist David Kuraoka features three ceramic sculptures nestled in native and tropical landscaping. Rising in stacked rings that echo the growth patterns of palm trunks, the sculptures transition in color from deep greens to blues, reflecting the natural progression from mountain to sea. The work draws from the traditional mauka-to-makai system of land in Hawaiʻi and depicts the beauty and abundance of nature, land and ocean as they were during the lifetimes of Victoria Ward and her daughters, and as they are today, honoring the Ward family’s enduring care for Hawaiʻi’s natural gifts.
